The hard-to-reach fortress, known as “motte-and-bailey” in archaeology, is hidden on the Kownackie Lake peninsula, surrounded by swamps and moat.
The local tradition connects this place to the times as late as the Napoleonic Wars – hence the name “Napoleonic Mound”. However, it is much older. It is about 800 m (c. 875 yds) to the south-east to the buildings of the Mrówki village, about 250 m (c. 273 yds) away from the road to the Świętne village. It was located in a place of defensive nature, namely at the end of the peninsula, by the southern coast of the Kownackie Lake.
From the north, it is surrounded by the lake. From the west and south, it is surrounded by the former bay, which is marshy now. About 27 minutes by car.
